Single mothers are expected to do the work of two people. And the stakes are high for their children.
There are at least 318,500 single mothers in Pennsylvania. That number, as collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, only counts those single moms who lead a household and doesn’t reflect those who live with family and friends.
Nearly all single moms feel judgment at one point or another. Many are made to feel that they could never compensate for an absent father.
They often struggle to provide for their children. Educations are interrupted by pregnancy. Well-paying jobs are difficult to find without those qualifications or the flexibility of a two-parent household. And with lower incomes, access to stable housing and health care can seem out of reach.
