Founded in 2011, PublicSource provides in-depth and investigative news about Pittsburgh and SW Pennsylvania. We distribute our content on our website and through 50 media partners throughout the state. We are an independent, nonpartisan news source that is currently supported primarily through foundations. We are working on a strategic plan that would vary that support by adding a membership model, corporate sponsors and individual donations. Our offices are in Pittsburgh.

Job Description:

The Development Director will report to the Executive Director/Editor and oversee individual and institutional fundraising efforts. This is a new position, and the Director will have the opportunity to work with the Editor and board members to help develop a strategic plan that will focus on funding from corporate sponsors, members, individual donors and foundations. Top priorities are increasing our base of PublicSource members and  identifying and working with corporate sponsors.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategy and annual fundraising plan.

  • Work with Executive Editor and advisory board to develop ongoing relationships with major donors.

  • Manage our membership program.

  • Develop and maintain an annual program of events that are consistent with our mission and increase engagement with our audience and support our fundraising goals.

  • Work with the Editor to identify institutional giving opportunities, develop grant proposals, and satisfy reporting requirements.

  • Direct donor data collection, management, and analysis.

  • Coordinate the work of volunteers and board members to help fundraise.

Reports to:

Executive Director/Editor


  • Passion for public-service journalism

  • Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree a plus

  • Three or more years’ experience in development or related fields

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills

  • Knowledge of a database to manage donations and memberships.

Salary commensurate with experience.
